statement
Drawing inspiration from my own lived experience, my paintings have a narrative quality that speaks to the universal human condition. We are complex, ever evolving creatures; a culmination of our experiences and a product of our environments. I am interested in concepts of identity in relation to polarity and the interconnected nature of all things. I consider both internal and external forces influencing the perception, construction and representation of a ‘self’ and how it fits within the immediate environment and wider global spheres. We are at once unique, autonomous individuals with free will to move through this world, and yet we are cogs within a social system that asserts control and influence over how that movement is actualized. At same time, we humans are asserting control and influence over the natural world, often without understanding that we are not separate entities; we are but a singular part of an elaborate biosphere, albeit an integral part with immense power to affect change. I am fascinated by the intricacies of connections and the relationships we create within ourselves, each other and to our planet.
Mariah Yager is self-represented and is currently taking commissions. Please contact the artist for serious inquiries.
